Durham’s Race for Life 2010

I attended the 2010 Race for Life in Durham to support my daughter who was taking part. Rather than just waiting for her to pass me at the DLI museum I decided to capture as many of the gallant participants as I could. I took over 1200 photos all of which can be seen on the two links. Armed Forces Day Raising the Flag

I was able to make it to the Durham Castle and market place part of the event but missed out on the first part.

I thought it was appropriate to include this photo of Neptune as the event was centred around the Officers and ratings of HMS Bulwark.

Finchale Training College honours Richard Annand VC

Finchale Training College has renamed its main building Richard Annand VC House.

It was almost seventy years to the day that his actions which led him to be awarded the VC were carried out.

Armed Forces Day

On the 22nd June, the raising of the flag ceremony was carried out at the DLI museum. In attendance were representatives of all the armed services along with Kevan Jones MP, the Veterans Minister, our local MP, the Mayor of Durham and the Chairman of Durham County Council and members of the DLI Association.
On the 28th June the veterans were presented with their badges.

2009 DLI Indoor Games

At long last I was able to get to the DLI Annual Indoor games. This year they were hosted by the Washington branch at the Top Club Sulgrave. The horrors of Washington came back when I tried to find the venue. I did feel a bit stupid when I was fifty yards from the place when I stopped a lady to ask directions.

The DLI Association Indoor Games for 2009 took place in the Top Club at Sulgrave, Washington on Sunday 8 March. One hundred and seventy-five members attended and 13 of the 15 branches were represented.

Club officials had set up the games area the previous evening and we were able to commence before noon with the first two games of darts and the first game of dominoes. These two competitions moved on apace until lunch was called at 1300 hrs. Most of those attending enjoyed a traditional army curry or a superb salad, both served with all the necessary trimmings.

After lunch all three disciplines moved slowly through the early games to reach the finals. The domino final was a classic encounter between the City of Sunderland and a revitalised Spennymoor. Because of a fixture faux pas, Spennymoor had to play an extra game to reach the final, but undaunted, they outplayed Sunderland to gain a much deserved win,

The darts final was a viciously competitive single game of 1001 between Chester-Le-Street and Stockton who were seeking to retain the trophy having won it in 2008. It ended with both teams on a double for eternity, but Stockton clinched it to put them in line for the Champion’s Trophy as overall winners, for they were also in the final of the whist competition.

In the final of the whist Consett & Stanley played Stockton with the former using a secret weapon to outplay their opponents - two members of their team were female members who swore that they had never played whist in their lives - a tense game saw Consett and Stanley emerge victorious which led to a most unusual amount of hugging in their victory dance.

Despite losing in the whist final Stockton became Games Champions with 12 points and will now seek the hat-trick in 2010.

The trophies were presented to the winning teams by Major Paul Wharton MM, Vice Chairman of the Association ably assisted by The Rifles Durham Secretary, Major Chris Lawton MBE.

Runners Up - City of Sunderland

Whist - CONSETT & STANLEY
Runners Up - Stockton

Games Champions - STOCKTON

Wooden Spoon - No overall winner!

Woolworths

I tried to get access to Woolworths in Durham on Monday to record the final clearout but was refused on the grounds of the administrators would not allow it. I took a couple of photos of the outside and a few through the windows as a record of a sad occasion. I think the sale sign on the bucket sums it up. The way the work had progressed it will not be long before the new owners will be in.

Durham Christmas Festival

Durham Christmas Festival
This years festival was held on a sunny but crisp weekend. The main marquee was the biggest one to date which gave free access between the many stalls. Late afternoon local school children started to assemble with their lanterns in preparation for the St Nicholas Procession to the Cathedral.
I have tried to give a feel of the festival through my photographs, but if any cause offence drop me a mail and will remove it.

Remembrance Day

This years remembrance day was extra special for me for two reasons. It was my eldest grandson’s first parade and I was allowed to take photographs in the Cathedral, which is always a challenge. So on a cold and wet morning the event was recorded.

Enlightenment

On Friday night along with hundreds of other people I visited Durham to see Enlightenment a light based festival. An installation was featured at four of the main bridges, these varied from hanging, floating to fixed light based artworks. I was intrigued to see the yellow parts of the eyes were made from safety helmets with an attached head lamp. I am sure everyone who had made the effort to see the work would have enjoyed it.

Durham Big Ride

Members of Durham Photographic Society were asked to record the second Durham Big Ride which took place in September. On the 21st Of September hundreds of cyclists of all ages and abilities turned up at County Hall to tackle one of the three courses ranging from a short route around Aykley Heads to a gruelling twenty five mile run west of Durham. Everyone seemed to have a good time except for one of our members who was on the ride, he fell off with just a mile to the finish and broke his collar bone in two places. I am pleased to report the borrowed bike and his camera were not damaged.
Thousands of pounds were raised for various charities in this popular and growing event.
An exhibition of prints by our members are now being displayed in the Clayport Library in Durham.

Victoria Cross - Stone Ceremony

The Faithful Inkerman Dinner Club “Victoria Cross” Stone Ceremony was held on Sunday 2nd November at the VC Stone outside The DLI Museum. This year the details of Pte Michael Wilson Heaviside VC actions were recalled by Lt Col J R Heron TD. chairman.
A wreath was laid by Major C Lawton MBE the Regimental Secretary the Rifles Durham. The event was attended by veterans and families along with thirty members of the Rifles from Catterick.
